How acupuncture works
Acupuncture involves placing very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points are associated with pathways traditionally known as meridians in traditional Chinese medicine. Modern research suggests acupuncture may influence several physiological processes including:
- nervous system regulation
- circulation and blood flow
- pain signalling pathways
- inflammatory responses
Many patients report feeling deeply relaxed during treatment as the body shifts into a restorative state.
Depending on your symptoms, your practitioner may also incorporate additional therapies such as:
- cupping therapy
- gua sha
- electro acupuncture
- moxibustion
These techniques are only used where appropriate for your treatment plan. If you are curious about the differences between treatment styles, you may also find it helpful to read about the difference between acupuncture and dry needling.

What to expect during your first appointment
What to expect during your first appointment
Understanding what happens during treatment can help you feel more comfortable attending your first session.
Consultation
Your first appointment begins with a detailed consultation. Your practitioner will ask about your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress and diet.
Traditional diagnostic techniques such as tongue and pulse examination may also be used.
Treatment
After the consultation, the acupuncture treatment begins. Very fine sterile needles are placed at carefully selected acupuncture points.
Most patients feel only a small sensation as the needle is inserted. The needles are typically left in place for around 20 to 30 minutes while you relax.
Aftercare
After the session you may feel relaxed, slightly tired or energised. These responses are normal.
Your practitioner will discuss a recommended treatment plan which may include follow up sessions and lifestyle guidance.
Patients are usually advised to avoid intense exercise, alcohol or sauna use for around 24 hours after treatment.
